Campaign Heroes

Each year, we take a look at all the events that take place and the volunteerism involved. From this, we select UBC employees or students that stand out. We call them Campaign Heroes.

A Campaign Hero is someone that is recognized for their contributions and achievements. The Campaign Hero goes above and beyond the call of duty.

2020 UBC United Way Campaign Heroes

Jenny Chen, Hanna Oliwa and Marina Ramalho, Vice-Provost International Office

Knowing how important social connection and giving is for our mental health, the VP International first time Campaign Champions Marina & Hanna along with committee member Jenny put together a series of three different group activities to support the United Way raising over $750. They held a wine survivor, sold pet calendars and auctioned off private lessons from those in the department who held special skills. These were all activities that while raising money also added a social dynamic to the campaign.

Silvia Almanza Alonso and Peyvand Fralick, Faculty of Education

Joining the campaign at the mid-point, Peyvand and Silvia embraced the spirit of the 2020 Campaign and were able to launch a digital scavenger hunt initiative for the Faculty of Education. Every week, participants would answer five new questions on a weekly theme. The Faculty of Education doubled their participation in the United Way Campaign in 2020.

Emily Jarvis & Alyssa Reyes, Athletics and Recreation

Working the United Way Campaign into an existing virtual event in October, the United Way Campaign along with Thrive presented a Lunch and Lift event. This event aligned the United Way Campaign with the Thrive 5 and addressed the importance of giving back as being important for one’s mental health.

Erneida de Guzman and Lisa Kerslake from the Faculty of Applied Science

As first time United Way Champions, Erneida and Lisa put together a digital campaign to engage the Faculty of Applied Science. Through weekly emails highlighting the work that United Way is doing in the community, the Faculty of Applied Science more than doubled their number of donors to United Way. The two UBC departments that showed the highest increase in donors come from the Faculty of Applied Science.

Development and Alumni Engagement Committee
Carla Banfield, Lea D’Altroy, Leah Dullum, Marie Labitté, Neil McEachern, Michael Murphy Carol Willoughby

No stranger to raising money – the DAE committee this year banded together for a group effort. While they set an initial goal of increasing the numbers from 72 to 100 – they finished the campaign with 111 donors. This team’s enthusiasm for spreading the message of United Way achieved a collectively strong result. Special thanks to Michael Murphy who spearheaded this campaign.
